In this 15 minute video, Alia shares her tips and tricks to help traditional Vinyasa poses work for curvy bodies without changing the intention of the poses. Beginning with a simple change to make mountain pose more comfortable, Alia offers variations on chair pose, lunges, standing and seated twists, child’s pose, and Shavasana. She also explains some of the physiology behind each pose so you can learn how best to adjust them to fit your body and be more comfortable while still enjoying the benefits of the poses.

We use a block and a blanket in this video.

Filmed at Oak + Lotus Studio in Austin, TX

Y’ALL. I am just overwhelmed with gratitude for all of your warm and loving responses here! I spent most of today in transit between cities so was only able to jump in and see your comments briefly a few times throughout the day, but each time I did my heart burst open with joy. (Some tears may have been shed too.) I’m going to do my best to reply to each of your comments individually, but since I probably won’t be able to get get to everyone, I wanted to start with a note of love and gratitude to *all* of you. THANK YOU all for your kind words and also for your feedback and requests! I know Adriene and the FWFG team are as eager as I am to create the content y’all want , and it’s SO helpful when y’all tell us what you want and need. I love that so many of y’all have picked up on the fact that many of these tips are not *just* for curvy bodies. YES, many of these tips can come in handy for any number of reasons and body types, and I’m so happy to see so many of you tuning in and playing with them! I love that so many of y’all appreciate my attention to intention. I CONSTANTLY talk about the intention of the poses, skills, and other elements of the practice when I teach. So if that’s your jam too, we’re going to have a blast practicing together! I’m so proud of the content I’ve created with the FWFG team for this beautiful community, and can’t wait for y’all to see the rest of it! No spoilers here, but I will say that many of your requests will be granted very soon 😉 Meanwhile, I hope you’ll check out my FWFG profile (https://fwfg.com/authors/alia) for more ways to connect with me and my teaching. I can’t wait to get to know you and your practice better! xoxx, Alia

I thought all the accommodations that "feel good" were because i was not flexible enough... but really it's because I'm curvy. Thank you for helping me to actually see myself!

Thank you, this is a big help in supporting inclusivity in the yoga world!!! If you ever have the ability to make anothet video, I would love tips on transitioning to chataranga from a lunge position when using the blocks, which always seems so awkward to me. Also, tips for people who cant raise their arms up when connected behind their back to get a good chest and shoulder stretch?

This is such a wonderful addition! Like many curvy folks out there, I also instinctively made some of these changes. To know that it's actually the best way to serve me nearly gives me this unspoken permission to show up as I am instead of trying to fit in. Inclusivity matters so much & I am really hoping that a whole bunch of curvy flow videos follow next! Amazing work 😍😍

OMG where have you been all my yoga life? It took me years to figure most of these out. I look forward to your next video. I'd l love some suggestions on how to use blocks in a lunge and then transition to down dog. Also anything on getting in and out of lunges or moving from down dog to the top of the mat would be great. Thanks again!
