In this Foundations of Yoga video, Adriene guides a practice of Shoulder Stand, or candle pose, for beginners. Though not for everybody, Shoulder Stand is known as the mother of all asanas!

There are benefits to learning the prep work for this pose allowing you to work at your own pace, safely, and with controlled breathing. Inversions can seem intimidating, but when done correctly, at your own pace, and with neck integration and awareness, it’s possible to enjoy the revitalizing benefits they have to offer at any stage.

With regular practice, benefits of this practice include, increase in immunity, healthy blood flow, healthy digestion, as well as an opportunity to soothe the nervous system and any irritation.

For this video, you will need two blankets or towels. Remember to focus on the process and the journey rather than the endpoint as we explore the postures of bridge, plough, fish, and shoulder stand.

Be mindful and remember, the breath always comes first. Hop into something comfy and let’s get inverted!

Just a little reminder to everyone to always be mindful of your neck! I am used to doing shoulder stand with relative ease, but for some reason the blanket under my shoulders made my neck uncomfortable. Without even thinking, I tried to adjust whilst lifting my legs around the 20 minute mark and pulled something in my neck so badly I have barely been able move for 3 days now. Nobody is more cautious or caring than Adriene so I’m not blaming the video at all (I loved the first 20 mins 😅), just warning all you lovely people that you cannot be too careful!

Boobs and tummy make this a tricky one 😂 i find the shoulder stand far more pleasant than the plow, at least i could laugh ❤️

Love this practice and getting back to the basics of any pose but I do shoulder stands as part of Face & Eye yoga a few times but am conscious that I may need to be a little more mindful! Tried with a blanket but found it much easier and more comfortable without! Happy July everyone ❤️🙏

I saw this, and I paused…hmmm…rolled my mat before I could ruminate on it. My curiosity got the better of me. So, I came on the mat without expectations. Trust the process, surrender to Adriene’s loving, supportive and perfect guidance. Anchoring in my belief that my practice has my back. Ever so mindful yet confident I have it within me, I would know. I’m so glad I did! I focused and was very attentive every step of the way! I watched Adriene’s approach and every move. I found something new in bridge and plough. Awesome! I felt so aligned. Still without expectation, I have it a go…when I lifted one leg up and the other from plough position…Candlestick! Adriene! Thank you for this gift! 😘 It’s not that I did it, it’s the feeling of opening up my throat, my shoulders, my upper back - my whole body - I can breathe fully and more buoyantly! There’s definitely tears of joy in yoga! Thank you for sharing your light and wisdom. I am grateful for June and looking forward to Expand even more in July! I Love you All! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜😘

I love this practice. Agreed, I find it much easier without the blanket. This 50 something also feels proud to be able to do plow, shoulder stand and fish

I actually preferred doing this without the blanket underneath. Not sure why for me it felt more comfortable and easier

I could not get my legs to my chest without doing the "Rock and roll"... Something to work on

I have mixed feelings about this. Im able to get into plow without the blanket but cannot, for the life of me, get anywhere near it with the blanket underneath me.
