Welcome to GET WHEEL, a class on back bending! In this video, I welcome my friend and yoga teacher Rey Cardenas to teach us how to GET WHEEL.

xx

Adriene

________________

Wheel is one the scariest, most challenging poses out there. The challenge in wheel, and back bends in general, is mobilizing your upper back and stabilizing you lower back and hips.

In this video we’ll use 2 blocks and cover some tried and true techniques for a pain-free wheel pose. If you don't have 2 blocks, don't worry! Rolled up towels or blankets will do.

- Rey

Great class, Rey! I’m 59, consider myself strong, but this was shockingly challenging. I was able to complete all the warm up—felt so good, thank you!! But when I got to the first wheel pose to putting my head on the ground, I found my arms were useless to elevate my upper body! Do you have any recommendations to strengthen this weakness? I have been doing daily yoga with Adrienne for 4 years straight and thought my whole body was strong. This limitation shocked me. Any guidance is appreciated!

I know I'm late to the party on this one, but I did it as part of the June calendar for the first time. Backbends and heart openers I've always been difficult for me emotionally - I feel an extreme amount of fear in poses like camel and wheel. I have the strength, and even though I logically know I'm safe, my body goes into fight or flight when my ribs stretch open and my chest and throat are exposed. As a result, I end up tensing in areas that I should not, and afterwards I want to curl up in a ball. If anybody has any ideas on how to approach heart openers and backbends without the fear, I would be very grateful.

Rey! Great class. I honestly didn't think I would make it to full wheel and I did. Those first back openers are so great! My biggest issue with wheel is my wrists hurt - any advice? Thank you!!

This is not good for beginners or people who are working to recover from an injury (back, neck, shoulder vulnerabilities). I wish there had been a content warning. Almost every step of the way I felt like I might get injured. I tried it because it was on the monthly calendar and didn't want to shut myself off to 'shift' in perspective, but if I hadn't stopped at minute 24 I might not have been able to move for the next 6 months.

Thank Rey! For another masterclass. Appreciate the way in which you led us into Wheel! That was superbly good. This warmed me up tonight. I was able to at least manage safely the last variation that you mentioned. Thank you! I could not get my arms to straighten up as my palms were sliding on my mat, I should not have slathered on lotion prior to practice! I totally appreciate the cues and all the strengthening stretches leading up to the back bending poses. This felt empowering tonight, and to know that there’s always a variation that will serve me well is a great takeaway. I look forward to revisiting this too! Thanks for keeping my practice interesting, engaging and helping me grow my lens and perspectives into having more depth, clarity and awareness of how much more my physical body can defy gravity! That’s so lovely and empowering especially nowadays! I don’t feel any tensions whatsoever. I feel calm after this. Thanks for the reassurance that it’s okay if I feel something in my shoulders tomorrow! And I do appreciate interpersing practices like these to pickup my curiosity! I would not have otherwise ventured along this path on my own! Thanks Team! And to all a good night! 💛💚🩵💙💜 07/03/25

Watched this yesterday just to get a feel of this practice then got down on the mat today and did all the work. Got my head off the round about 2” for a few seconds. Like others, I have been doing yoga daily and lifting weights, but at 69, I have a little more work to do to make this practice better. Thanks Rey. Excellent prep and instructions to get to my wheel, even if it looked like a deflated tire! 😉 Will keep working on it.

Amazing! I don’t have the strength to push up and did try the leg variation- still not there. But the entire practice was so yummy! I actually did a camel for the first time ever! A definite repeat practice. Thanks Rey!
