This video is an exploration of the 4 sides of your core (front body, back body and side bodies). Stabilizing the 4 sides of core supports your spine and creates a circumstance that is optimal for movement as well as holding yourself in space.

The primary action we are working with in this video is the engagement of the transverse abdominis aka the TVA. The TVA are the deepest core muscles that wrap laterally around the lumbar spine. When engaged, they perform a corseting action that stabilizes the lumbar spine and enables other parts of the body to leverage movement off of that stability. It is a fundamental action that should be utilized on and off your mat. With the TVA engaged, we then explore some unconventional approaches to engage the more peripheral muscles of all 4 sides of the core.

I invite you to make the physical aspect of this practice serve as a meditation by focusing your awareness on the sensations that result from the actions that you take.

Let me know if you want to know more about the esoteric stuff behind some of the actions, or if you prefer to hear more about biomechanics, or if you like both.

As always, I welcome your questions and feedback via the comment tab!

Love,

Rey

During Vishnu’s couch, I had a lot of pain where my hips connected with the ground. Do you have any tips for preventing this? Also I’d love to hear about both the biomechanics and the esoteric aspects of the poses!

This was great, but the side work caused pain from my hip bones pressing directly into the mat. Was I doing it wrong? Thanks

Fantastic practice. I learned some great biomechanical tips and enjoyed the esoteric talk. I like Keri’s idea on a course on Esoteric study. Thanks!
