We ease in to practice today with a breath technique that can help balance out the brain and body. Alternate Nostril Breathing, also called Nadhi Shodana, is an incredible tool for activating the parasympathetic nervous system which can restore balance - particularly if you are consciously, or subconsciously, living more in fight or flight mode - which is common in such uncertain times.

We will introduce the powerful play of opposites in yoga asana as well, considering the ways in which we may join steadiness, or STHIRA, with ease, or SUKHA.

I will guide postures today that are there not to discourage you, but to help you play with the concept of how to create a dance for both steadiness and ease, and one that is individual for you.

I invite you to use this material to check in, learn, and grow.

Remember, it’s not about being able to stand on one foot.

Learn the process of centering yourself, and remember, it’s a process.

If you fall, I will catch you.

You got this.

View Alternate Nostril Breathing video from 2014, if you wish for a full tutorial.

At 11 min 30 sec Adriene says step your right foot back (which i do) but Adriene stumps me and puts her left leg back (I don’t see this) then at 13:46 Adriene says step your left foot up (i think im hearing things because at this point im in survival mode) so i go with my right leg up, I then realised I’ve done 2 rights and no lefts, so I had to go back and do 2 lefts 😂 Thank you Adriene for “Yoga for the brain” (I seemed to have lost mine today) as well as “Yoga for the body” today. This was a great practice 👌🏻🙈👏🏼

One of my nostrils is ALWAYS stuffed so alternate nostril breathing is the opposite of peaceful for me. Anyone else ever have to sub a different pranayama method?

What were the words Adriene used for the balance of strength and grace?

I love the yoga practices with Adriene, I was not doing yoga until i started in April of this year, I cannot go one day without it now and it has help with pain, flexibility, strength etc. This is my 7th 30 days, one constructive comment though I am finding this practice a bit too easy.

Nice follow-on from day 8. However the very significant miscue at 11:30 really disrupted my practice as I rely almost exclusively on the audio cues. I do wish these left/right errors would be corrected in editing.

I started crying as soon as I touched my nose. I must… devour my feelings and all the feelings around me and store them in my body. It’s probably not healthy. Oh. It’s a safety mechanism. I need to know how everyone around me feels so that I know if I’m safe or not. Dang childhood trauma sure does like to lurk in all the corners and crevices of your psyche doesn’t it? It’s frustrating. But I don’t want to feel broken or fight against my struggles all my life. I want to learn from it. I want to heal. I want to look at my trauma as if it was a little child or young woman and give them a hug and let them know. It’s ok. I know that hurt you. I’m grateful for what you’ve done to keep us alive, but it’s time for us to learn to let go and learn something new. We are not safe because life is safe, we’re safe because we will be healed eventually. Wounds don’t need to be destructive, they can be healed, creating strength and beauty and love within. It’s a practice that leads to progress

Nearly two years ago, I began cultivating a daily home practice, a desperate experiment in a time of crisis. I was struggling and trying random videos on YouTube, proud of myself for showing up even though I didnt feel like I'd hit any sort of groove yet. My sister suggested Adriene’s YouTube channel and recommended her 30 Days of Yoga. Months later, after I'd done it and fallen in love with my daily practice, my sister joked that she should really revisit the series since she'd never made it past Day 9 any time she'd begun it. Almost two years of daily practice later, this is my second time embarking upon the 30-day journey in real time with the community, and this time my sister and a few of our friends are joining us! Even though we are all far apart, the practice and group support has offered another creative way to stay connected. We celebrated today that she officially made it past day 9! I already can't wait for tomorrow! Every time I come to my mat these days, I am overwhelmed with gratitude and relief, and I'm thrilled to be here breathing with all of you! Namaste ✨
