Developing a Journaling Practice for Whole Living

Journaling is an opportunity to bring awareness and intention into your day. When we start our day by journaling about how we want to live that day, it is an opportunity to put self care on our list, not only the tasks required for the day. It is a chance to put an item (or more) on the list that nurtures you. It can be an invitation to set a mantra for the day to return to throughout the day to keep you connected to your intention for the day.

In addition to the required tasks of the day, if we do not include the self care things that we want to do, we may never get around to self care because the tasks that the day requires will take up all the time. By making self care part of your daily tasks, you are making self care part of your day, not an extra thing to try and squeeze in.

Some tips:

Get specific.

Be realistic about your day and don’t over estimate what you can accomplish in the day.

Honor your intentions for yourself, as you would a scheduled appointment or requited task.

When you find yourself feeling unfocused during the day, refer back to your journal and tackle one of the items on your list.

There is no shame if you don’t get everything checked off. Start again the next day by setting intentions for that day, don’t carry over items from day to day just because you didn’t check it off the previous day. Consider each day as a fresh slate and look at what need to be done that day and what you need that day.

By putting both daily life tasks and self care items on the same list, it reinforces self care as an integral part of your life, not something extra to try to fit it. It sets the intention that caring for ourselves also matters.

What are you going to focus on this week- setting self care intentions or setting a mantra of intention for each day?

Let us know how the week is going for you. Let’s talk about it in the comments below.

Take good care,

Sarah
