Dive deeper into the philosophy of yoga with this overview of the eight limbs. In this 11-min video, Rey will teach you how to take your practice off the mat and into your daily life to improve your general wellbeing, then end with a simple meditation. Learn a modern framing of classical yoga, the purpose of the poses, the breath as the center of the nervous system and the moral foundation beneath it all.

The eight limbs of yoga:

Yama (Restraints): Ethical principles that govern interactions with others, such as ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truthfulness), and asteya (non-stealing).

Niyama (Observances): Personal practices that cultivate inner harmony, such as saucha (cleanliness), santosha (contentment) and tapas (austerity).

Asana (Postures): Physical postures that promote flexibility, strength and balance.

Pranayama (Breath Control): Techniques that regulate and purify the breath, leading to increased focus and inner peace.

Pratyahara (Withdrawal of the Senses): Turning inward and detaching from external distractions.

Dharana (Concentration): Sustained attention on a single point, developing mental discipline.

Dhyana (Meditation): Deepening the state of concentration and achieving a state of inner stillness.

Samadhi (Union with the Divine): A state of blissful absorption and oneness with the universe.

Can anyone recommend a good entry-level book on this subject and yoga theory please? I’ve practised for years but want to know more about yoga philosophy off the mat as well. Thank you in,advance x

Many thanks, Rey. I’m so pleased to go deeper into Yoga philosophy here on FWFG. Will there be more videos coming? I’ve been on a self-study of the sutras, incorporating my understandings into daily living. Further and group study here would be excellent, altho I’m sure not easy.

On anxiety, It feels important for me to add that it was not self absorption that caused mine, but external abuse, and so I do continual work to remind myself that fear responses are not a bad thing or my own failing, but instead my system trying to protect me. I aim for different methods of protection now, but understanding and compassion feels essential to get there. A lot of times I think these sorts of mental health labels get glossed over as individually rooted, whereas for me, true support looked like someone who did not blame me as an individual for systemic problems. Hope that helps!

Thank you for sharing these concepts in a very understandable way. As someone who struggles to visualize objects in my minds eye, I wonder if you have advice. I find myself stressing about not being able to “see” the rose.

What a lovely chat, Rey. I have not heard of the 8 pillars of yoga. I have learned about Asana and Pranayama here on FWFG, though (thank you, Adriene). Samadhi is a pillar that I have learned from another teacher, but I was unaware that it was a pillar of yoga. I loved how this chat turned into a meditation. I'm surprised to feel such at ease following this video. Thank you, Rey, for your wisdom and for your soothing, calming voice. It helped me to feel my own essence. 🙏🏻☺️

Hey Rey, thank u for this meditation. I have a question, it was quite difficult to understand the concept of the rose and its essence and how it is related to me. Do i become the rose when i put it into my heart and breathe?

I’m so grateful to dive deeper into the other limbs of yoga and would love more videos on each one. If I could make a suggestion, it was hard to tell when we started meditating. In the future maybe there could be a more pronounced part of the video where concepts are discussed (possibly with some visual representation such as the words themselves,) and then a clear pivot to a short meditation.

Thank you so much Rey! Your knowledge and insights are always welcome! 💜

Thank you Rey....you gently describe yoga limbs....I was able to go through the various ones as you led us in meditation. It seems to me that many spiritual practices and teachers currently are saying how important it is to realize that we are all connected, that the breath is everything, and as you described to sit without thinking...to just be. I hope that this community strengthens this positive vibration to balance this time of turmoil. Namaste

Three times through with some meditational notes in between. Sets my intent for more in depth thought and practice on how I join my off the mat behaviors with my on the mat self…in the areas of all 8 limbs. Looking at the provided list equalaterally (as limbs of a tree) rather than as a heirarichal list… It seems practice in all the limbs is what offers the balance we seek.

Sincere thanks Rey. Namaste. 💕🕯️

Namaste Rey! 💚🩵💙💜

I had to revisit as I was so bowled over by what you shared and led me to discover yesterday - it was so touching! I was so moved and felt a myriad of emotions, so much Wow! factors. It all made perfect sense. It’s all in alignment...

Connecting. Purposeful, intentional, dedicated and almost devotional investments of free time and moments of solitudes focused on turning inwards by/in doing routines/rituals/practice, even hobbies (instead of mindless distractions to fill time or being aware of why I do something…it’s evolving, always a WIP) to discover what lies within and aligning those with my core values, simplifying (applied mathematics)… how precious, it all was! And is! What we’re practicing on the mat and being mindful off of it…Instituting boundaries…And marrying those to where I truly feel my best self. All that you shared makes sense and resonated/s well!

All those precious moments spent here encapsulated/s the 8 Limbs of Yoga! Your overview…is what we have here! What Adriene shares all the time. That I was still marvelling at how much it all made sense and connected within. Those Aha! moments. Well… :) That sort of robbed me ;) of a blissful meditation at the end — the roses I could not wrap my head around on ;) as I was focused on those roses a few days ago when I noticed bugs…so, I didn’t fully embrace it 😁 and so this morning I went over in my head on all the other flowers and plants and settled on the African violets all thriving and blooming well! That was lovely! I felt its essence, even its leaves on my skin…take it to my heart, at home within. That brought an inner smile, lightness, gratitude, warmth…glimpse of the divine! In a very short time, you lifted me even higher. Thanks for always taking me higher and sharing the many ways to sit with myself and just be. I am so honored to receive your light. Thanks for sharing your wisdom! May everyone feel the same way. “What a wonderful word this would be!” I can dream. Through practice :) they do manifest themselves if it be for the good of all. I trust. Clean slate. A sure fire great way to meet the day. 🩷🧡💛💚🩵💙💜 03/28/25
