Take 16 minutes to pause. The focus on breathwork continues today, with an introduction of gentle breath retention. Building on our breath ratios, we will learn to implement a small conscious pause between our inhalation and exhalation… and the exhalation and the inhalation. Think of it as a circular thing.

Breath retention has loads of benefits and is safe to practice slowly with mindfulness. If you have serious cardiac and hypertension problems, you can skip it. Stick to the counts and enjoy the benefits of ratios as we all continue to learn to re-pattern so that we may breathe more optimally.

Your ocean breath, which we have learned and used in previous sessions, is a perfect match for Kumbhaka. Combine the two and explore!

Read more about breath retention, or Kumbhaka, in today’s Breath email.

Let me know how it goes for you in the comments below!

Hi. Just joined fwfg. Have been following on utube previously, am now a memebr. Im an oldie (72) with arthritis and sometimes have to do your own version as Adriene says. Great today, i love the breathing techniques. They seem to help me focus on easy pose

Thank you for this pause Adriene. It made me reflect on how much my yoga has evolved over the years I have followed you and through this breath program. I started out on the breath journey being so impatient, that I interrupted the first sessions because it was too slow; too little action. Now I smile before bedtime and look forward to show up in the morning :)

This was a powerful practice for me. In the past, when I have tried to hold my breath, I am filled with terror and anxiety, and I hate it. But I hace now been practicing with Adriene daily for 451 days and counting, and today I was abke to calmly retain my breath and follow the guidance without any issue. This is huge!!

I had an awful migraine and was able to do this in the dark. Super soothing.

Pausing before reacting is my New Year’s Resolution for 2021. It feels incredible to be focusing on it daily here. Really looking forward to noticing the off-the-mat benefits. (And, as a fellow singer, I always appreciate the singing - Whitney Houston!)

Hello Geoff welcome! Similarly I started watching YouTube in March and joined fwfg in November. I do my own thing as well sometimes but don’t have a good excuse like you I just hate boat pose and crow frightens me! 🤣🧘🏻‍♀️👋

Absolutely love this idea of not just the physical pausing of the breath, but relating it to pausing off the mat before I react. I feel like this journey with Breath is really helping me reestablish my relationship with my spirit and God. Thank you, Adrienne! Amazing. 🙏🏻💕
