This 22-minute Pilates session with Liz is designed to strengthen your interior and exterior obliques, outer and inner thighs, buttocks, and transverse abdominal muscles. Pilates focuses on your core as the “hub” of your body to which everything else is connected. This session is no exception! These exercises increase strength and mobility in the hips, which decreases strain on the lower back. Follow Liz’s instruction to train your whole torso and learn to use your core for optimal spinal rotation. Finish your workout with a peaceful moment of loving kindness.

A block and a towel are used in this practice.

Argh - I really wanted to like this as I often find my lower back is tight & sore, but I found lying on my side really uncomfortable on the side of my upper thighs/hips. This made the exercises around the 9min mark impossible, causing me to stop in frustration. I don't know how to modify the position to make it do-able - or why that position is so sore/uncomfortable. But lying on my side hurts! I guess as a Pilates newbie I also struggled a bit with working out exactly the movements and the feet angles - seeing what she's doing mostly from a front view doesn't give you an idea always of the exact direction of the movement. Any ideas on what to do if simply lying on your side is painful? It felt like there was a tight muscle(?) or something that didn't enjoy the pressure being put on it.

Thanks! I was uncertain of where to place my legs. This uncertainty arose several times. I was particularly unsure of what "in line with your sits bones" means when you're on your side on the mat. Perhaps if Liz had on lighter colored leggings it would be easier to tell how much her legs were bent. Neck or back injury seemed like a possibility. I'll try this again (carefully), and see whether clarity develops for me.

I loved this! I’m surprised by some of these comments, they’re disrespectful. I would like the instruction slowed down a bit as well, but the class was nicely structured and I LOVE this instructor’s warm vibe. I look forward to the next pilates session. Remember that yoga was a struggle for you the first time you tried, your wrists probably hurt and you felt confused. Let’s bring that same humble beginner’s mind to pilates and trust that our own strength will grow! I can’t wait for more.
