Developing a Journaling Practice for Whole Living

Journaling is an opportunity to bring awareness and intention into your day. When we start our day by journaling about how we want to live that day, it is an opportunity to put self care on our list, not only the tasks required for the day. It is a chance to put an item (or more) on the list that nurtures you. It can be an invitation to set a mantra for the day to return to throughout the day to keep you connected to your intention for the day.

In addition to the required tasks of the day, if we do not include the self care things that we want to do, we may never get around to self care because the tasks that the day requires will take up all the time. By making self care part of your daily tasks, you are making self care part of your day, not an extra thing to try and squeeze in.

Some tips:

Get specific.

Be realistic about your day and don’t over estimate what you can accomplish in the day.

Honor your intentions for yourself, as you would a scheduled appointment or requited task.

When you find yourself feeling unfocused during the day, refer back to your journal and tackle one of the items on your list.

There is no shame if you don’t get everything checked off. Start again the next day by setting intentions for that day, don’t carry over items from day to day just because you didn’t check it off the previous day. Consider each day as a fresh slate and look at what need to be done that day and what you need that day.

By putting both daily life tasks and self care items on the same list, it reinforces self care as an integral part of your life, not something extra to try to fit it. It sets the intention that caring for ourselves also matters.

What are you going to focus on this week- setting self care intentions or setting a mantra of intention for each day?

Let us know how the week is going for you. Let’s talk about it in the comments below.

Take good care,

Sarah

I love the weekly prompts. Maybe this could be a regular feature? Thanks, Sarah!

Sorry i pushed post accidentally😊 i just wanna say, you don't know how lucky you are until something like this happened..then you forget about all stuff and just realize how lucky you are to wake up every morning and how lucky you are if everyone arround you is fine..life teach us something every day, we never know when we will go from this world, but the time we have here is sooo precious and short. We all know this but it's so easy to forget that, please enjoy life, life is a gift, use it the best way you know, be kind to one another, wake up with a smile, help your old neighbor, speak with kids more, do what ever makes you happy, but don't take this life for granted i know i never will from this day there will be good and bad days but i will try to do my best every day, and i'm writing and sharing this to remember myself and anybody who want's to listen, we don't have forever, be happy everyone, sorry if i upset somebody with this post i just feel so empty today..

I know I'll struggle with this one. The concept of setting an intention on paper is not clear to me. I'm afraid I'll end up writing a to do list. I'm not sure how specific the intention has to be. Are there any good references on intention setting?

Hello all! Hope we’re all finding at least some smiles in our days...I’m not quite clear on whether each week we do all prompts are only the new one, but I suspect whatever feels good is the way to go. And this morning I knew there was stuck energy in my body and mind, so I started with the free flow of whatever came up; and then, five gratitudes; and then, my intent for the day: and for my intent today I look to open and broaden my heart towards spreading joy. Love to all of you! Here together!

Hello from Croatia. My country was hit by an earthquake today early morning, 5.3 richter, i jumped from the bed as the ground was moving it was really terrible way to wake up. I forgot everything, my name, my dog, my cat i was just scared for my life, i'm ashamed of that i guess i'm not good at thinking in panic

I did it! All seven days this week! It really is incredible how perfectly this has lined up with coronavirus shutdowns. It’s really helped me get a healthy perspective down early and I’ve been bringing that connection and perspective to the fearful hearts around me. And I’ve been feeling this great optimism and truly deeper connections with those around me. I know it’s early, and I’m sure we’ll get sick of each other some too. But Sara and everyone who brought this too us! Thank you so much! It’s just the catalyst I needed at the perfect time!

I'm so excited to start this week's journaling. Intentions seem to be hard for me so I'm curious how it will go. I've added meditation to my daily yoga practice and think that has helped me stay focused on my intention for the day--but I've never done a bulleted or lists in journal writing--so this sounds like such fun. Love seeing what everyone else has done, too. Thank you, Sarah. It feels so nice to just write and have no pressure or judgements on what one is saying. Your attitude comes through in the video and it makes me want to write each week. Happy day to everyone.

Thank you so much for putting this series together, Sarah. The gratitude journal particularly has helped me to turn around some tough days, and I’m excited to start intention setting this week! 🌱 I have previously felt quite intimidated by the idea of journaling, but your enthusiasm and kindness is allowing me to trust the process and grow as a person. Thank you ❤️
